Kosher Krispy Kreme Kloses
The Krispy Kreme in Owings Mills, which heretofore had been listed as kosher by the Star-K, but possibly certified kosher by the someone else, is now closed. When asked why they were closing, a person who answered their phone said, "We weren't making enough money." Hat tip to IG.
Krispy Kreme (KKD) was trading up nine cents on the news.
:'(

Anyways I hear that Amandas is up for sale again. it doesn't look like it will remain kosher.
Its a shame it had great potential but run by a bunch of morons. I hope that pomegranate stays alive and healthy because its the only normal establishment around unless your in the mood for chinese.
Well, with Kosher Cinnabuns just a hop-skip-jump away, who can blame anyone for not buying krispy khreft?

Isn't it like 3 hours away?
Posted by: karen at May 13, 2008 9:57 AMIf the ingredients used at all Krispy Kreme's are the same, besides for having a mashgiach, what made this one different.
Many people eat Baskin Robbins ice cream. they dont have a mashgiach.
Can someone please explain why we cant eat in any
Krispy Kreme?
Good question. Krispy Kreme is technically kosher: http://www.krispykreme.com/nutri.html
I'm not sure who certifies it, though. In addition, there are problems of bishul akum.
Posted by: Greg at May 15, 2008 9:26 AMLast I checked the hashgacha on the factory itself was KOAA. This has to be acceptable to the Star-K and other certifying agencies or they couldn't certify the local stores. (The only kosher-certified eatery in the area where I know live is the Krispy Kreme at Mohegan Sun, certified by Diamond-K out of Boston.)
There is no issue of bishul akum, donuts are not oleh al shulchan melachim. And unlike Dunkin Donuts, where they sell sandwiches with non-kosher meat as well as non-certified cheese, Krispy Kreme sells only donuts (or coffee rolls), coffee and other drinks. I eat them anywhere and tell my congregants they may do the same, but of course I am Conservative.

Arian: there are differing opinions regarding what oleh al shulchan melachim means; the Aruch HaShulchan interprets it to mean any food which would be eaten by a wealthy person, which would include donuts, I believe. There are significant sources to interpret oleh al shulchan melachim as you mention, including R. Soloveitchik and many known cases from Europe, that held it has to be food suitable for a state dinner. I tend to agree with you, I doubt that a king would serve Krispy Kreme at his table. Then again, if I went to meet my non-Jewish girlfriend's parents for the first time, and they server Krispy Kreme...that might just seal the deal. ;)
