Kosher Subway Opens Today

Baltimore's Kosher Subway is open today. A private preview gathering was held last Thursday night, Peninah and I were fortunate enough to attend along with mostly Star-K employees and friends of the owners, and I got a chance to sample some of Subway's sandwiches. I was very impressed, especially by the breads and the selection of toppings.

Many people have remarked to me that they think Subway will have a tough time competing with other local delis like Accents and The Knish Shop. While I agree that they will face competition, from what I've seen Subway does have some unique aspects to it that set it apart:

  • parve cheeze

  • a wide assortment of breads and toppings (the garlic bread is amazing)

  • the Subway name (which doesn't matter much to frum Jews, but will bring non-frum business)

  • a very nice and spacious location, with free wifi

  • items not available at other locations, such as the meatball sub with cheeze

As such, I think there's plenty of room for a kosher Subway in the local market.

In the interests of full disclosure, I'd like to make it clear that I've received no compensation from Subway (other than the free samples I got last night). I like the food and I like the fact that mainstream American franchises are going kosher. I had kosher Cinnabon and Subway this week; I think it's a signal of where things are going, and I hope it continues.

Now Baltimore is as cool as Brooklyn and Kew Gardens Hills!

Is pareve "cheeze" a brand name, or is it a product similar to pareve cheese?

Posted by: Josh at April 7, 2008 2:04 PM

I believe that "cheeze" is a brand name for the kind of parve cheese they use.

Greg, do you have a copy of the menu, or can you post high-resolution photos of the menu on flickr?

Got it, thanks.

Cool. I probably won't get to Baltimore until mid-May, but I'm looking forward to trying it out. Back before I kept kosher, I used to enjoy several subs at Subway, so I'm eager to give these a try! Thanks for the report.

The hot Kosher Cheese and Turkey Sub on Garlic Bread was amazing. They had a lot of non-frum customers as well. I asked one of them and he said it was the same as other Subways.

Good job guys.

Just went for lunch and it was CROWDED. A decent number of the people in line were distinctly not Jewish. Interesting, but I wonder if they'll come back as it was a good 15-20 minute long wait in line. The food was quite good.

Thanks, Greg. My wife and I were in Baltimore today anyway, and thanks to your info we headed to Subway. We were impressed at how nice it was compared to some of the other kosher places in the area. Food was yummy, too. It wasn't too crowded when we got there just before dinnertime, but by the time we left they were developing a good sized line. I hope they do well. As for the cheese, I thought I saw a Tofutti cheese wrapper taped to the glass by the first station.

I was there for lunch yesterday and today. Yesterday I had the meatball sub with cheeze, which was very good. Today I had the chicken and beef fry sandwich with cheeze, pickles, lettuce, onion and chipotle dressing. Both were on garlic bread, toasted. I liked the chicken/beef fry more. Waiting to try the steak sub.

I was very impressed, so far everyone I've been there with has been impressed as well.

Guys, please keep the reviews and recommendations coming.

We went to Subway last night and ordered two Kids' Packs (one turkey with cucumbers on whole wheat, the other roast beef on wheat with all the works). Interestingly enough, our kids LOVED the subs, but didn't think the cookies were that great (they ordered chocolate chip). Also, they were annoyed that the Kids' Pack came with a Bratz toy, which was too girly for our boys.

I wanted to order the Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki sub, but they were all out of that, so I ended up ordering the grilled chicken sub with melted mozzarella on toasted garlic. I had them add all the works as well as the Sweet Onion dressing that would have gone on the Teriyaki sub. It was quite delicious--so much so that I think I'll be going back there today for lunch.

My husband ordered the Chicken and Beef fry footlong sub on toasted Italian Herb, and he devoured it. Both of us couldn't believe how fresh the subs were--especially since we didn't even get there until after the Little League game was over at close to 8:00 PM! Not only were the meats and fixings fresh, but so was the bread!

The place was extremely clean, which was a nice change of pace for those of us who frequent Baltimore restaurants. Maybe it's because they don't fry anything, so the air isn't permeated with grease and oil???

All in all, a pretty excellent experience. . .and the final bill was extremely reasonable too!

I am surprised that the STAR K would let the Bratz toy go out!

So I topped at Subway after 9 tonight and was pleasantly surprised! My wife and I split a toasted meatball sub (garlic) with "cheese" and it was great. In my comment to Greg's March 24th posting, I had assumed that the prices would be consistent with the NY/NJ subways. That is not the case and I am happy I was wrong. In fact, for people who have been in non-kosher Subways (Gosh - did I just say that?), I am sure you will agree that this one loads the sandwiches with more meat than most non-kosher Subways. subways. I am looking forward to bringing my co-workers to this clean establishment for a thorough comparison.

I also have had a remarkably good experience. I have been to 4 kosher subways so far (Cedarhurst, CA, Livingston, and Brooklyn) and this one hands down is the best I have seen so far. The combinations of size, price, layout of the store, TV messaging, music (nice and very appropriate Jewish and not rock as in some), makes me feel very much like I want to keep coming back for more. I have been there each day and have loved all the different combinations that are possible. They have over 12 dressings and some you never see in restaurants often - chipotle, ranch and caesar (pareve that is) and many more. If you mix the breads and dressings each time you go, you can come up with 1000's of possible combinations.

I spoke to one of the owners and he told me:

1. They love working with the star k. They have worked with other kashrus organizations in other kosher subways and the star k is to the point and fair at the same time. They mentioned in particular how impressed they were with Rabbi Kurcfeld.

2. An average sandwich should take in an ideal subway 1 1/2 - 2 minutes from start to finish to make. With four people working the line efficiently, theoretically that means if 100 people are in line the last person should be able to get his or her meal within 30-40 minutes or less. Now that is VERY fast for a restaurant and why this is called fast food. That assumes though that each person coming through the line will know exactly what they want and the people making the sandwiches have maximized their line experience. At the start both of these cannot happen as many people coming into the line have never been to a subway before and are overwhelmed by the menu as to where to start. So eventually as each person comes into the line and says give me 2 clubs on garlic bread with lettuce, ..... and 3 terriyaki on italian herb bread with.... all will go much faster. Now everyone is asking many questions and the process slows down for everyone in line. They said they would try to start educating those in line waiting so by the time they got to the front they could move the line faster. Also the employees are learning the line process and this will take time to maximize their efficiency also.

3. They might be running out of some meats throughout the weeks before passover. They are having some supply issues due to the passover intense rush but all should be back to normal sometime during the week after passover (they are not sure when they will reopen after passover but it won't be immediately as they will need to get new food from most of their suppliers after passover is over. They might also close early some days this week depending on their meat situation.

4. Jared Fogel (he is Jewish and is the subway star of commercials) is supposed to be in Baltimore May 6th and 7th and they are working with the community leaders (organizations and schools) arranging to have him appear in the community when he is not in the store, on TV, on radio, with newspaper reporters, and doing interviews.

5. The TV's and sound system are hooked up to the internet and have satellite capability. They will only be used for educational purposes only he told me. So for example if anything important is going on in Israel, they may go right to an internet TV station, FOX News, or an Internet Radio interview. They may also turn off the the music and go to arutz sheva / israel national news radio at anytime they want.
