Liebes Closing

Tomorrow is the last day to shop at Liebes Kosher Deli, a long-time Baltimore kosher establishment. Liebe's recently sold to new owners, who are apparently closing down the shop to pursue other business ventures. If anyone would like to write up a history of Liebe's, I'd be happy to publish it.

I remember my parents telling me how they used to go on dates to Liebes, in its old location, way back during the 50's, since there were limited kosher restaurant options then.

Can't say I'm surprised to hear about the closing, through. The store had strange hours that weren't posted at the store (which was doubly confusing to customers), and they weren't consistent.

I went there for lunch one day, found the stored wasn't opening until something like 12:30pm on that day (so - no lunch rush business), and even waited around an extra 15 minutes, but no one came to open up the store.

I finally left, as did another woman who'd been waiting outside to buy something there, too.

Ah well.

Greg: why don't you go to the source, call Mr. Liebes and interview him.

:( They had the best chicken tenders in Baltimore!

Greg - Not to nitpick, but it is Liebes', not Liebe's. The guys name is Leibes, not Leibe. I think my in-laws told me that they went on a date at Leibes' when it was on Rogers Ave. Imagine that. Josh

Until it changed ownership recently, Liebes was probably the last eatery in the world that had no formal hashgacha, yet everyone ate there. You would tell that to people in NY and elsewhere and they could not understand it. The truth is that Mr. Leibes preceded the Star-K and there never was once any question, issue, or screw-up (sorry, Star-K), and certainly never any kashrus scandal. This speaks to Mr. Liebes' sterling reputation spanning decades, that he played no "shtick", and the fact that our community bought into the place's reliability based on knowing this about him. This kind of thing is a relic of the past, and the icon that was "Liebes" is no longer. For that I am sad. Let us hope that Mr. Liebes has a long life in retirement until 120 with all of our positive memories of his mentchlichkeit, purety, and chopped liver.
