Krispy Kreme still Kosher
I've been hearing lots of talk that Krispy Kreme in Owings Mills was no longer kosher; indeed, they are no longer certified by the Star-D. I called the Vaad today to double-check, as the Star-K's website, as of this morning, still listed Krispy Kreme as under the Star-D. Turns out it is true that Krispy Kreme in Owings Mills is no longer under the Star-D, but someone from the Vaad does go in and check it on a regular basis and it is, according to the woman I spoke with, OK. So there you go, feel free to make your own inquires.
This applies only to the Krispy Kreme at 10021 Reisterstown Road in Owings Mills.
[Update: I forgot that Diana posted about this a while back. Consider me enforced.]
Had you posted this on Friday, a lot more people could have benefited from KK's Doughnut Day, where they were giving out a free doughnut to all customers.
Posted by: aishel at June 4, 2007 7:08 PMDude, I told you 5 seconds after I got off of the phone with the va'ad, last month that they are still kosher. Why don't you a. believe or b. hat tip me.
Some Enforcing is definitely in order.
I don't understand what this means.
The Star-D symbol belongs to Young Israel but is administered by the Baltimore Vaad b/c the Vaad in theory doesn't certify products which are chalav stam. So now the Krispy Kreme is under neither Star-K nor Star-D but the Vaad still checks it and says it is kosher?
This sounds like "kosher by ingredient" to me. I don't have any problem with it but hey, I'm Conservative.

The link to Diana's post makes sense. While it's no longer Star-D it is now KOA, but the Vaad rabbi is still doing the actual inspections. So there is still an actual hechsher, just a different one. Thanks for the clarification.
Posted by: Charles at June 5, 2007 5:59 AMThank you. I was running out of polish for my brass knuckles, and you saved me a trip to Baltimore.
Although, maybe if you got beat up enough you would get a Mac also.

Not really - back when the hashgacha changed (which is a while ago)- there were other KK's in the country that also switched to KOA. KOA, by the way, is also the agency that ceritifes the plants that make the base ingredients.

I know that. My question is that it's not under Star-K or Star-D, yet it's in the website. It's under KOA, but a Star-D/K Rabbi checks it out? I;m not questioning the kashrus, as it's probably one of those things that only requires minimal oversight anyway.
Posted by: Dr. E at June 5, 2007 11:13 PMThe Star-K has always made it clear in interviews and such that they recommend products, not hashgachos. If they feel comfortable with the level of kashrus at Krispy Kreme by doing some due diligence investigation once in a while, I don't think that's weird at all. In fact, it's actually nice to see their public stance affirmed locally like that.
I also heard down the grapevine it's the same mashgiach as before, too. That probably plays a role, too, if true.
