BHU in Trouble

According to the Jewish Times, Baltimore Hebrew University is in trouble. I can't really comment on the role or affect BHU has on the Baltimore community; all I know is that their library is a great resource and it would be a shame to lose it.

Oh, this is so depressing. I became "modern" in BHU's library.

I wonder how much of this turmoil is leftover from Robert Freedman's demotion a few years ago. (I don't think he helped matters by politicizing the school, using its resources to promote APN. I suspect that there are quite a few others - Rabbi Loeb for example - who would disagree with me on that.)

My wife took a course there 15 or so years ago. She was appalled that, in her course, that included responsa that students were not required to read the original text in Hebrew; the teacher had to provide translations. I got the impression that BHU doesn't have the highest academic standards, no matter how good its library is. Being absorbed into an existing institution may really be the best option available.
