Truth in Advertising

[Note: to get the full effect, read this post here]

A few weeks ago, the following ad ran in Baltimore's The Advertiser:

Last week, the following ad ran in Baltimore's Jewish Times:

They are the exact same picture, only in The Advertiser version, someone photoshopped skirts onto all the non-frum/non-Jewish employees.

Peninah and I disagreed as to the reason why the digital alterations were made. My theory was that The Advertiser refused to run an ad with "un-Tznius" women (I say "un-Tznius" in quotes both because it's a colloquialism and because there really isn't anything terribly "un-Tznius" about how these women are dressed). Peninah thought that the ad was altering in hopes of better marketing to frum people by making all the subjects of the ad appear frum. The reason why I think my answer is better is because most people would not think a black woman was frum just because she's wearing a long khaki skirt. Any other ideas?

Say it with me now: OIB.

check out the neck lines on the african american lady

Ha, I missed that! My theory is totally correct.

I wasn't saying that I think they were trying to make the people in the picture appear frum, but rather sensitive to frum needs. In any event, I think it is ridiculous. It reminds me of the time I was in the pediatrician's office and there was a woman reading a dragon tales book to her daughter and calling the dragons "chana and yitzchok". Whatever. Ridiculous.

Yikes. Do all men and boys appearing in ads in the Advertiser and WWW have to wear kippot? Appear with tzit tzit hanging out? Maybe they will go so far as not allow women to appear in ads at all.

OK, first of all, I am totally cracking up at the 2 different pictures. You bet OIB. I have no idea what the Advertiser's policy is so I can't really make a call as to exactly why they did it, but I would venture a guess and say that they did it to make frum people feel more comfortable if they would choose to go there. Meaning, we all know the African-American lady is probably not Jewish, but they are trying to portray that the staff is "sensitive" and dressing the way frum people dress, so the frum patient won't think he/she will burn in he** for seeing someone wearing pants. So ridiculous.

Peninah, I have seen so many parents change the names in kids books to Jewish names...it is quite comical. Have you ever met parents who won't read Dr. Seuss's "Green Eggs & Ham" to their kids?

Greg

You got it backwards (v'nahapoch hu). The women were all indeed wearing skirts during the shoot. It was the treife B. Jewish Times that Photoshopped in the pants, to make the staff more appealing to ITS readers--and in the process placing a stumbling block before our eyes. (Why are you reading the BJT anyway, you sheigitz?)

Several months ago, I ate at someone (frum)'s house. I'd seen their recently-married daughter & son-in-law in a photographer's ad in the WWW and mentioned it to them. Turns out that the daughter's dress' neck had been filled in (without their permission--the daughter was very upset) to make it higher. They were not happy, but they weren't sure if it was the photographer or the WWW that made the change.

I don't think this qualifies as an OIB. Look at the Yated and Hamodia, they don't even allow advertisements with women in them. They go so far to even blur out the face of a mannequin.

This is a misrepresentation at best. Someone may see the Advertiser's ad and go to that facility on the assumption that even the non-Jews wear skirts and appropriate tops.

Actually, Peninah is right. There are lots of companies that change their ads in frum publications in order to target that niche market.

For one, there was the clothing store that a few years ago had lots of ads in WWW and the Advertiser for "tznius clothes" in screaming headlines. In a non-Jewish publication the same store ran the same ad graphic except that it didn't use the word "tznius" and also mentioned in bold type that the owner would do your numerology/tarot reading when you bought clothes there.

Actually, at first I thought like Dr. E - that the BJT made the skirts into pants. But DM, who always liked African women, certainly made me do an about face on that one. So, I see that I'll have to put away my cynical dam l'chaf chov (opp of zchut, for you BTJ readers out there) attitude for this post.
However, the halacha does make a point of mentioning, Greg, that a major issue of Tzenius is (and this is quite commonly under-known) that one should not be able to view that there is a split between the legs from the knee and up.
As such, it does have a remarkable bit of non-tzenius in it, whilst I'll agree that there is nothing outlandishly lewd about the photo. (except, DM, the hot african woman, I didn't mean to offend you)

As an aside, I would change the names of kids in childrens books, if the names were offensive (like jesus and nebuchadnezzar, for example). But I would be honest with my kids and tell them that 'we'll just call him yankle - because after this book was written he met with a mohel, plunked in a mikveh and is now running a kollel in bnei brak.' (*singing* hinei kel yeshuasi.... - anybody with me on this one)

Haha, wow, I can't believe they actually did that.

It's a classic bait-and-switch. What happens when a patron shows up and the slutty women are wearing whorish pants instead of skirts?

Posted by: Warren Moon at February 22, 2007 12:44 PM

I'm curious what "frum" name Chareidi Fanatic uses for Hitler when discussing the Holocaust.

Posted by: Warren Moon at February 22, 2007 12:48 PM

Ironically enough, we used to call Hitler "Warren" - maybe we'll have to come up with a new name for him...
