Conference on Modern Orthodoxy

AJHistory:

The Forward reports on the upcoming Modern Orthodoxy conference, to be held next month at the University of Scranton. The conference is organized by my teacher Rabbi Dr. Alan Brill and Scranton-based Dr. Marc B. Shapiro, and based on the "History and Ideology of Modern Orthodoxy" honors seminar which Dr. Brill taught at Yeshiva College last year.

I'm considering looking into going to this. If any local organizations want to sponsor me, I'd be more than happy to work something out.

Does it bother you that the conference's schedual (on the website) has no davening times? From what I've heard the "edah" movement is much more Modern than mostly anyone in the Baltimore area (aside from the few in the new breakaway from Suburban - Netivot), and many of their halachic decisions come from b'dieved kulahs or other strains. What would be your goal in attending?

The earliest anything starts is 9:15, and there are generous breaks scheduled throughout the day, so it looks like there would be ample time for davening.

My goal in attending would be to learn things that I don't already know.

To take Edah seriously there needs to be more rabbinic input, not just obscure historians. The average person has not heard of most of these.

MooMoo - that's a pretty ignorant statement. No one is paskening shailohs here.

Would you suggest we wait until R. Matisyahu Solomon is invited to speak at the Edah conference?

Movements without a Torah in Judaism dont go anywhere: Secular Zionism, Secular Judaism, Conservative Reform, etc. If Edah wants to get serious they have to put some Torah into it not just history.

MooMoo - give me a break; the conference is entitled "Modern Orthodoxy 1940-1970." There's no need for R. Matisyahu Solomon, or some other Rosh Yeshiva, to oversee the proceedings. If you're claiming that Modern Orthodoxy as a whole has no rabbinic leadership, then you've got your head in the sand.

Head in the sand ? Can you name 10 Rabbonim who are squarely in Edah, who can pasken ?
Cmon. Edah is an excuse not a Torah Movement. Dont waste your time.

Edah is part of the rest of Modern Orthodoxy. It is an advocacy group for certain projects, like this self-reflective history conference, adult educaton classes, or a broad tent approach. It is not a seperate movement from the rest of Modern Orthodoxy.
