Judaism is not a religion

A friend of mine wrote a post inquiring about the Judeo/Chrisitan approach to hermaphrodites. I posted a comment with a link to an article from the RJJ journal by R. Alfred Cohen. What occured to me was the distinct oddity of the fact that Judaism deals with this issue so extensively. And not from the point of view of does this person get into heaven or not. Judaism isn't about that. It's about the real world, about people and how they interact with each other, how they confront the world into which they are so uncerimoniously thrust. Sure, there's some stuff about God and angels and all that, but if you focus on it, you're missing the point. The metaphysics are all in support of the creation of a concrete, real-life political reality. We spend too much time gazing off into the heavens, not realizing that all that's up there is empty space.

Yes, Judasim focuses on the hear and now. But ethical monotheism requires Hashem. It is not simply a system of do and don't.

I've met many Platonists in my day, and I, my friend, am no Platonist.
