Banning the Internet...It's Not Just for Kids Anymore!

The ban on the Internet has now been extended to the members of the Lakewoord Kollel.

So here's the question: Did the Internet just get more or less:

  • interesting?

  • entertaining?

  • valuable as a resource?

When I first heard about all this "stuff," I tried to tell myself that Lakewood was a different world that I had nothing to do with. Then I went to shul Friday night and met my neighbor's brother, who was visiting from Lakewood for Shabbos. And so I realized that this very much has to do with me, with us, with all of us.

I am not a big fan of isolating ourselves from the world.

Me either. Nor am I a big fan of Pamela Anderson teaching sex education in my living room...

Rabbi Heber spoke about this in his Shabbos Shuva Drasha (seemingly agreeing to the ban).

So, Greg, whatcha gonna do?

Seriously - there's nothing you can do short of just saying "I'm going to ignore that". OK, you could also get off the internet, but I'm _guessing_ that's not an option.

I find this all to be very odd, because Orthodox Jews have such an astonishingly large and well-developed presence on the Internet. Indeed, compared to the shtus box (hehe, I'm so yeshivish!), it's a veritable cornucopia of Jewish thought.

I didn't read the letter, but was it addressed only to the kollel members? Could be this is some kind of internal problem they want to address.

Hey: I'd be interested to hear more of what R. Heber said, if you could email me, or leave a comment, that would be great.

DMZ: I'm not going to do anything as regards Lakewood. There's nothing I can do but continue to try to make the Internet a good place by posting thoughtful kefira.

The takano was focused on those in the kollel.

How are the kollelniks going to support themselves by managing their portfolios when there is no computer to manage them from?

(Of course an even better question is how many kollelniks have portfolios to manage? But why ask such a question as I was informed that one can easily support themselves while in kollel by investing?)
